About Cancer

Cancer is the name of over 100 diseases in which cells in part of the body begin to grow out of control. Though there are many different kinds of cancer, they all begin in the same way, with cells growing out of control. Some cancers grow very slowly and never actually cause illness. Others grow very fast and cause serious illness and even death. We know that cancer cells begin and grow abnormally after damage to our DNA. Some DNA damage is caused by environmental factors such as smoking. Genes predispose some families to cancers. And some cancers are related to our ageing bodies. Others have no clear cause and remain a mystery.
